The stunning beauty of the 2,000-year old city of Palmyra, Syria, as it looked in 2004 when I was there. Sadly, between 2014 and 2017, Palmyra was mostly destroyed by ISIS. Attempts are being made to restore the world heritage site. PHOTO BY ELLEN CREAGER/DETROIT FREE PRESS.
